Why I started a resume writing and career coaching business.

I’m not 100% sure how I got started in reviewing resumes but I’m glad it happened.

When you are young and get asked “what do you want to be when you grow up”, rarely is resume writer and career coach the answer. I can’t pin point the exact moment I became the go-to person among family and friends for critiquing resumes but I’m grateful that moment happened.

I was helping a friend update their resume for a job change in 2021 when I realized how much I truly enjoyed writing people’s career stories. I also had started building a record of helping people close to me reach their job goals of pay increases and flexible work so I decided to take it a step further. After extensive research on how to start a side hustle and all that was involved with starting a freelance writing business, I began 417 Resume Renovators.

I started by building my own beginner website with some simple explanations of my service along with my email address. After some learning lessons of how to effectively communicate with customers, I started getting messages. It started with booking one customer a month, which turned into scheduling one client a week, all while still working a full-time day job. There were many late nights and early mornings required to balance building a business with a demanding day job.

After some soul searching and realizations that life is too short to not try something new, I decided to take a leap and leave my 15-year career in the corporate world for life as an entrepreneur. I reached a point where I had to turn down business and the work of helping people get the jobs and promotions they worked hard for was way more enjoyable and fulfilling than what I was doing for a paycheck.

I plan to document that journey along with proven resume and interview advice in this blog to be a resource for anyone that will find it helpful. There is so much conflicting information on tools to navigate the job search and my goal is to provide helpful information to anyone changing careers or looking to advance in their current organization.
